Carbon Black for Lead Acid Batteries

Carbon black as a conductive additive has been used in negative active mass (NAM) electrodes of automotive batteries and industrial batteries for several decades. In standard lead-acid batteries, carbon black can improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode, increase the formation efficiency and reduce the residual sulfate level. It also improves the electrical conductivity at the end of discharge, when the content of isolated PbSO4 crystals in NAM increases substantially.

In the 21st century, advanced lead-acid battery technology has been developed to meet the significantly increased requirements for emerging start-stop/hybrid electric vehicles and stationary energy-storage application, which include high dynamic charge acceptance (DCA) and long cycle life during micro-cycling at partial state of charge. The main feature of this technology is to use a conductive carbon enhanced negative electrode. Carbon Black for Lithium-ion Batteries

Conductive carbon black is an essential additive in modern lithium-ion batteries. It is used as an additive in small dosages in the cathode forming a 3D conductive network to ensure that the non-conductive active material (e.g.  Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt-Oxide) are electrical connected with each other and the current collector. Without a conductive carbon black that covers the surface of the active material in a fine network, electrical current would not flow and the battery would not work. Therefore, such conductive additives need to have a low resistivity, high conductivity and very good dispersibility to achieve the lowest possible loading in the cathode preparation. All materials used in a lithium ion battery must meet high purity requirements, as metallic impurities and moisture can lead to unwanted side reactions and have a negative impact on performance and durability. Thus our dedicated PRINTEX® kappa 100 grade for lithium-ion battery offers lowest moisture level, highest purity and high conductivity to meet all those requirements.

Carbon Black for Primary Batteries

Acetylene black, carbon black derived from Acetylene gas, functions as a conductive additive in many different primary batteries such as Zinc-Carbon, Zinc-air, Li-primary batteries to ensure the electrical conductivity of the cathode.
