Mechanical Rubber Goods
Orion Engineered Carbons offers a variety of high-tech rubber carbon black grades that meet the demands of mechanical rubber goods (MRGs). Our product portfolio covers a wide range of particle size and structure and includes high purity grades.
Typical applications include:
- tubes and hoses
- (conveyor) belts
- extruded profiles
- molded products
- seals
- gaskets
- anti-vibration engine mounts
- wiper blades
- rubber flooring
- footwear
The MRG industry operates with a vast number of different compound formulations to fulfill the requirements for numerous applications. Carbon black has various functions in these formulations and improves the performance as
- A filler with excellent reinforcing properties
- An effective processing aid
- A low-cost diluent for expensive polymers.
Food contact applications
In recent years, global regulations have been established regarding rubber applications that came into contact with skin or food. Some regulations implement restrictions on the type and weight percentage of carbon blacks, while others focus on the final rubber product. Health concerns generally arise from Polycyclic Armoatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Carbon black contain a very low amount of PAHs. Although studies revealed a tight bonding of PAHs to the carbon black surface and no migration through the rubber matrix, there are still precautionary limits. To meet the resulting demand for compliant carbon black, we have developed the PUREX® product family of clean MRG grades with a reduced PAH content.
